Environment
As a neuro-affirming community, we value, respect, and support autonomy by listening, having flexibility, and building connections for nervous systems to feel safe. Our "facilitators" individualize support and guide opportunities of learning.
When the body and mind are in distress and signs of dysregulation are recognized, students are supported to help ease and balance their systems. Stepping aside and giving quiet support and space for students to retreat is helpful.
Who Benefits?
Students with complex difficulties, whether Autism with PDA profile, Anxiety, ADHD, or sensory, executive function, social understanding, auditory processing, communication, masking, and other differences require specific support to participate and access meaningful learning outcomes.
Our education system shouldn't be the barrier to learning authentically...
Being placed into a system of conformity negatively impacts mental and emotional systems. Conformity is debilitating and inhibits wellbeing.
Presume Competence
To presume competence is to acknowledge that all individuals have the ability to learn, to communicate, and to participate in their own way. It means that we provide opportunities for self-directed learning by creating accessible & inclusive spaces.
To presume competence is to respect the value of human diversity.
Total Communication Approach
Multi modal communication is a holistic, inclusive approach to communication and values student preference.
In addition to visuals, whole body language, and AAC, we use nonviolent communication, declarative language, and listening of the heart to support autonomy, anxiety, and social learning challenges, including being in silent present moment awareness.
Brain-Body Connection
"Behaviors" or dysregulation are an indication of how individuals are perceiving situations in their body and brain. Brain-Body Connection is an individual's entire nervous system.
By understanding their inner reality - the sensory experiences, feelings, and emotions that underlies behavior, we can help support the nervous system.
Co-Regulation
Interoception is mindfulness of the body and how to understand the physical and emotional sensations coming from inside the body. It allows us to answer the question, “How do I feel?” in any given moment.
For individuals with sensory differences and/or anxiety, co-regulation support can help your child become more aware of and conversant of their inner reality - their sensory experiences, feelings, and emotions.
